Maria Milewska has been studying music for as long as she can remember. She is an all-round musician who is interested in just about everything!
As a child she wrote pop-songs, and took up the flute at the age of seven. She began her classical training as a singer at ten. She continued her training throughout her school life, where she took G.C.S.E and A-level Music, and involved herself in as many musical activities as she could.
She sang in three choirs and was a first flute in the school orchestra. She was a part of the tradition of learning folk-songs, which she performed regularly. She competed in singing Eisteddfods several times a year and joined an Amateur Musical Theatre club. Along-side these activities; she worked her way up the musical grades in both flute and Voice, gaining consistently good marks, until she completed all her exams to grade eight level with distinction. Although she has been playing her own songs on the piano for a while, at the age of 17 she started having piano lessons. She only had piano lessons for a couple of years, she quickly got up to grade five standard.
So far, Maria’s training had been traditional, but throughout her time at school she had maintained a strong interest in pop, electronica and dance music. She was fascinated by the music industry, and made up her mind very early on to pursue a career that was intrinsically linked to it.
During her last year at school she applied for and was accepted by several music conservatoires. She eventually decided to go to the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, which at the time was the only conservatoire that offered Creative Music Technology, something that she felt was extremely relevant today’s world. But first she took a course to help her get more performance and song-writing experience with bands in a popular music context.
The course she took was at Access to Music Studios, a large chain of colleges across the country that specialise in nurturing musical talent in many contexts. She spent a year gigging and writing music, and was awarded a Higher Diploma in Contemporary Popular Music at the end of it.
Following this, she went on to do a Creative Music Technology degree at the Royal Welsh College. Going to university allowed her to take her already considerable skills and develop them in a new and highly desirable, more technical way. She learnt to use a variety software and hardware, was taught how to record and produce, and continued writing all types of music, from classical pieces to electro-acousitc, to pop-songs, to the music and sound FX for film-clips! Examples of her work can be found here, so feel free to have a listen!
